Although it may seem scary to sit with a therapist and talk about life, therapy is proven to be a very helpful resource. We know some of the stigmas that therapy holds such as “ therapy is for crazy people,” or “they’ll make me take medications.” These misconceptions are bold enough to drive anyone away but this is a lie driven by media. When you come and see a therapist this does not qualify you as crazy, it is actually a very brave thing! It is okay to need help! Counseling is a way to identify and overcome difficulties and challenges that we are not able to work through alone, especially if we are not aware of them. We can discuss issues within ourselves or issues that we may be experiencing with others in a healthy manner. There is no judgment in our sessions and we strive to provide guidance that will most benefit you. Regardless of the severity or intensity of the issue, we can all benefit from seeing a therapist- there is no such thing as an issue that is “too small.”  Through therapy, an individual can release any emotion that they are feeling or any issue that they are currently facing.

Being a human comes with many different struggles. The challenges that we face may all look different to one another but no one is exempt from them. These experiences can leave marks on our lives whether that is stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, etc. This can lead to feeling overwhelmed and even alone at times. Unlike other animals our experiences connect us, we as humans have an ability to share in our triumphs and our tribulations.

The way we react to situations can be unhealthy sometimes. Lucky for us, we were not born this way! We developed different attachment styles from our childhood. These unique styles of attachment come from how our primary caregiver treated us. From an early age we create distortions that will change our trajectory for our entire lives. These distortions appear in one of four attachment styles. The four attachment styles are Secure, Anxious-Preoccupied, Dismissive-Avoidant, and Fearful-Avoidant.
These attachment styles affect the way that we view ourselves and out of that flows how we view our relationships with others. If we have learned to cope with unhealthy attachment styles, then the result of that will show up in how we handle struggles internally and externally. Although we cannot change how we obtained our own attachment styles, we can learn to operate differently than we have been. Therapy allows us to know and understand what our attachment style is so that we are able to recognize it and enhance the way we communicate in our relationships.

Different types of therapy
The most valuable thing about therapy is that there is not just one form of it. There is individual counseling, group counseling, addictions counseling, and couples counseling. We provide different categories because we understand that everyone falls into a different sphere and we want to acknowledge our differences and allow our clients to have a freedom knowing their needs are being met.
    Individual Counseling
Our individual counseling focuses on recovery from PTSD/trauma, depression, anxiety, pride, cognitive distortions, self esteem and our self image. Our counselors are equipped to take you through a process of letting go and overcoming any unhealthy ways of thinking and behaving. READ MORE...
    Couples Counseling
Couples counseling focuses on pre-marital and marital counseling for those wishing to improve, repair or enhance their relationship with their significant other. This is a great way to communicate expectations with each other and talk through any concerns that you may have. We create a safe environment so your therapist can guide you through tactics that are healthy for your couple bubble.  We also offer “Prepare/Enrich,” which is an assessment that is accompanied with skill-building exercises. This program allows for the couples to discuss everything from how they plan on handling finances to how they want to discipline their children. It allows the couple to create a vision for their household before they face opposition that could compromise their relationship. This is a great tool to find different stressors on a marriage, even more so when the couple is not sure how to effectively communicate and find a solution. Finances are one of the major causes of divorce within marriages! We can equip you with skills that can help you win! Our counselors also use PACT (Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy.) PACT uses neuroscience, attachment theories and the biology of human arousal to direct the couple in their ability to resolve conflicts. It teaches and promotes the principles needed to be part of a secure-functioning ecosystem. Without a healthy environment for each individual of the couple to thrive, it can end up in a relationship that is insecure, and broken. PACT sessions look different than regular couples therapy because of the awareness that we are trying to reveal in the relationship.

    Family Counseling
Another side of counseling that we offer is family counseling. Each of us here at Joyful Restoration has a family and we understand that the dynamic of each one is unique. It takes a lot of communication and vision to navigate through life with each other. Families can have events that occur that may impact the way that they function as a whole, even if the circumstance has only happened to an individual in the family. In order to overcome the dysfunction, we can discuss any mental health concerns, illnesses, or just everyday concerns such as conflicts between one another or behavioral problems in children that are causing stress on the relationship. Discussing any family issues with your counselor can result in a repair and enhancement within the family unit.
        Addictions Therapy
Often in life we can end up in a cycle of loneliness and despair and because every individual is created uniquely, we handle difficulties in our own ways. Occasionally that can look like using drugs and/or alcohol to cope with reality and the stress that it brings. Going through addictions counseling can equip and empower you to cope with negative emotions without the use of drugs or alcohol. We also know and understand the way that drugs or alcohol can leave their imprints even after you have stopped using.  The cravings that last after the withdrawal of these substances can be challenging to cope with, that is why we also give tools to help you overcome the stressors that spark the cravings. We are not blind to the process of healing wounds and we want you to overcome the battles!  We also offer therapy in a group setting, so that you do not think and worry about going through the journey of healing and restoration alone. A group session can be just what you need if meeting one on one does not meet your needs. This allows for the opportunity to speak about any problems, how you can resolve them and even how you can change the direction of your behaviors. Also learning to listen within a group setting that may have the same difficulties and challenges as you do can be beneficial and affirming that you are not alone in what you walk through. Having community is such an essential part of life, we all need a healthy support system that sticks with us and cheers us on!
A lot of individuals struggle with unresolved trauma, some so deep that it can possibly interrupt the way that we function in our day-to-day lives. We believe that through EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing,) we can reprogram the brain to remove the emotions that are attached to the trauma that the person has experienced.  This process then allows the client to walk through the trauma, store it away in their memories, and when it is recalled, they do not experience the excessive emotions that were tied. Another positive aspect of this therapy is that the client is in complete control of it, we do not hypnotize. Although traditional therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can be used, it takes much longer to give results than the time that it takes EMDR to achieve.  Another method of therapy that was created in 1991 by Dr. Steven Vazquez has proven affective and is known as ETT (Emotional Transformational Therapy.) ETT incorporates lights, colors and the eyes of the client to transform their emotional state, that may be in distress from trauma or depression or even related to physical pain, from a negative state to a positive one. It is a unique form of therapy that can help to restructure our brain signals for a healthier response to circumstances. It results in lasting, healing transformation, more so than any medication could offer, without the side effects of a medication too.

In addition, we offer Play Therapy, which we believe is a unique form of therapy. Along with the parent/guardian of the child and the child, the therapist can relate with the child through playing. We have a room in the office where the child can feel free to draw or paint, play with instruments, or play with any other toy they choose! This then allows the child to process what is around them, what they may be feeling due to a certain situation or circumstance, and develop coping skills and positive relationships.

We know life can throw us all kinds of scenes and circumstances. Some of these moments are beautiful and some of them can happen in an instant and catch us off guard. It is easier to say, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade” than to actually do it. The great news is that we do not have to stay stuck in a moment, we do not have to stay stuck in the hurt and the pain; we do not have to deal with life all on our own. God has promised to walk beside us and He gives us tools and resources that are in our reach when we need them. Therapy is one of those tools that are accessible to us. We welcome you with open arms and grace. Our hope is that as you take the steps to move in a healthy direction, God would restore your relationships and you. There is an abundance of joy that waits for you!
