Why is Spinal Care important?
Movement is life. Our bodies are designed to move. But not all movement is that important; it is proper, biomechanically sound, motion that is important. Proper movement is what fuels the brain to inhibit pain centers, improve spatial awareness, and master new skills. Proper movement creates stability at our joints and gives them nutrition so that they do not break down. Our bodies were not designed to be sedentary; they were designed to move. Our spines create a foundation for which all motion takes place. Our spines must be able to move properly and unrestricted while maintain stability; however, they are constantly placed under stresses they are unable to adapt to such as prolonged postures and weakened over time. A properly functioning spine leads to less injuries, more productivity, higher level bodily function, and a happier, healthier, pain-free life. |

Your spine plays a vital role in the structure and function of the body. The spine consists of 24 MOVEABLE segments (there are more but not all are moveable) starting from the base of the skull all the way down to your tailbone. The segments aka vertebrae are designed to protect the spinal cord, which is an extension from the brain and gives rise to nerves that control and regulate every cell, tissue, and organ in the body. There are many benefits to Spinal care including the inhibition of pain, improved posture, less injuries, improved overall body function, faster reaction time, better biomechanics, and less stress. Low back pain specifically is one of the leading causes of disability in the United States and when left untreated or is covered up with anti-inflammatory drugs and pain killers the issue will continue to worsen over time. Pain is not a deficiency of acetaminophen. Pain is a symptom that is letting you know that something is wrong. Chiropractic will identify the root cause of the pain, restore motion, and create stability so that your body can begin to heal. Pain is one of the last symptoms to come and the first to leave. So whether your goal is to decrease pain, prevent it before it starts, or just be healthier and function at a higher level, we can help you!
What education does a Chiropractor have?
Chiropractors have a Doctorate in Chiropractic. The program is 3.5 years of post-graduate school. The coursework includes 2.5 years of academic courses including anatomy, neurology, radiology, physiology, biomechanics, physical diagnosis, and many more. For the last year of Chiropractic school, the students work as Chiropractic interns in a clinical setting. Additionally, Chiropractors must take a series of 5 examinations through the state board to obtain licensure. Once Chiropractic students complete their Doctorate of Chiropractic and obtain licensure from the board they can practice Chiropractic and you will see Dr. in front of their name with DC behind their name.
Is Chiropractic care for me?
Chiropractic care is for just about everyone. There are very few people who should not be adjusted, and we will perform a thorough history and exam to determine if you are one of those very few people.
Is Chiropractic care affordable?
Chiropractic care is very affordable! A lot of Chiropractic offices offer a variety of insurance influenced services which can get awfully expensive. At this office we focus on the most important aspect of Chiropractic—restoring mobility and creating stability. As a result, we offer high quality Chiropractic care for a very affordable cash-based price without the hassles of working with insurance. We accept cash, check, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and HSA/FSA cards.
What if I don’t want to get my neck popped?
Although it is typically recommended to have the neck manually adjusted, we have other methods and techniques to restore neck mobility that we can use. One of the alternative methods is by using an ArthroStim device which is similar to an activator but much more effective. We will place the device on a specific segment that is restricted, and it will make tiny rapid impulses into the joint until the motion is restored.
Is Chiropractic care Safe?
Chiropractic care is very safe. There have been many misconceptions about the safety of Chiropractic in the past; however, the research has proven that Chiropractic is a very safe and affordable form of healthcare. In fact, Chiropractors have one of the lowest malpractice insurance costs amongst healthcare professionals due to it’s high degree of safety. Most of the misconceptions about Chiropractic relate to complications due to adjusting of the neck. These claims are not true and it has been proven by science many times. One of the most commonly cited studies by David Cassidy concluded that there is “no evidence of excess risk of VBA stroke associated chiropractic care compared to primary care (physician).” When we adjust the neck, we are not taking the neck outside of its normal range of motion; therefore, there is no reason for injuries to take place. In fact, there is more strain placed on the vascular structures in the neck when you actively or passively rotate your head to it’s end range of motion in comparison to having your neck adjusted. For example, turning your head to check your blind spot or getting your hair washed at a hair salon both put more pressure on the vascular structures of your neck relative to when we adjust it. If you still do not feel comfortable getting your neck adjusted, do not worry. We have other techniques that work as well!
Will I get any benefits even if I don’t have any pain?
Absolutely. Chiropractic has many benefits besides relieving pain. It is known as wellness care. Wellness Chiropractic care allows for improved posture, enhanced function, better athletic performance, reduced injuries, and an overall enjoyable pain-free lifestyle. This type of preventative or wellness care can also save time and money by keeping minor problems from becoming more serious. Pain is often the last symptom to present and the first to leave. Keeping the joints freely moving throughout their normal range of motion makes pain less likely to present at all.
Does Chiropractic care help avoid future problems?
Yes. At our office we will both get the spine moving properly and create stability. The Chiropractic adjustment is the most important thing we do; however, it is important to keep up with our stability drills as well. When your spine and joints are not moving properly your body must compensate and it can create flawed movement patterns. These compensations can lead to future injuries due to microtraumas sustained during improper positioning. Muscles surrounding joints must be able to appropriately adapt to different types of load, joints that are not stable are much more likely to be injured when placed under load. Load can be something as simple as lifting something off the ground or sitting for prolonged periods of time, all the way to powerlifting. The concept of stability is important no matter what you are doing. Our stability drills and adjustments will help prevent future injuries and will keep you functioning at a higher level.
Does it hurt?
Most people experience no discomfort when we adjust them; however, sometimes restricted joints can be tender because they are inflamed. We have many different techniques that we utilize with our patients and it is our job to figure out what works best for each. Everyone responds slightly differently to getting adjusted, which is why it is important to find a Chiropractor who knows a variety of techniques to find what helps you the most. Some people experience some soreness if it is their first time ever being adjusted or if they have not been adjusted in a long time.
Do I need to be adjusted all of the time? What is the recommended treatment?
The answer to this question varies greatly from one patient to the next. It all depends on a combination of what we find on the initial examination, how quickly you respond to treatment, and what your goals and expectations are from Chiropractic care. The most general way to describe it is that there are two main categories of patients: active and wellness. Wellness patients are patients who are not in much pain so they are maintaining a condition that has already been resolved, preventing future injuries, trying to function their best in their sports and hobbies, trying to increase mobility, trying to improve their posture, etc. A vast majority of wellness patients come in about once a week for their Chiropractic adjustment. Then there are active patients. Active patients are those with an active condition or current level of pain that is preventing them from being able to work or perform activities of daily living effectively. These patients typically come in 2-3 times a week for 2-4 weeks depending on the severity and how fast they respond to treatment. Chiropractic has may benefits besides pain relief and wellness care will keep your condition from returning in the future; therefore, it is highly recommended to switch to wellness care after an active condition is resolved, but it is not required. If your goal is simply to get out of pain, we can help!
What to expect?
Your first appointment will take 30 to 40 minutes. You will automatically be emailed intake forms that you can fill out at your convenience before coming in for your first appointment. During your first appointment, your Chiropractor will ask you any questions he/she may have about your intake forms, perform a history and examination to determine what is wrong or needs improvement, and determine what your expectations are for Chiropractic care. Next, we will come up with a plan to fix your problem areas. Our initial goal is to get you out of pain as soon as possible, if you have any. We will accomplish this by correcting spinal motion using various Chiropractic adjustment techniques and creating stability in your joints. Once we have you out of pain you will officially be classified as wellness. At that point we will shift our focus to maintaining the progress we have made and helping you continue to function at your best. If we can not help you, we won’t treat you, but I am confident that we can!
